Tips for Escaping a Structure in the Event of a Fire in Northeast Ontario

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

escape plan When fire strikes your Northeast Ontario/Kaiser area home, trust us.

SERVPRO of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser knows a small flame can turn into a large fire in a matter of minutes.  Sometimes, a portable fire extinguisher is not enough to save your Ontario  home or business and the only thing you can do is escape.

Lives are more important than objects, so get yourself and others out of danger.

SERVPRO of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser Offers these Tips for Escape:

  • Make an escape plan ahead of time. Make sure everyone knows the plan
  • Make sure that all doors and windows open easily
  • Plan at least two different ways of escaping every room
  • When you leave, close the doors and windows to shut in the flames
  • Practice the plan
  • Do not stop to pick up valuables. You can replace objects
  • Make sure your plan includes a place to meet that is a safe distance from the home
  • Do not turn off smoke alarms when you cook.  You may need the warning
  • If you have to go through smoke, crawl under it

SERVPRO of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser reminds you to call the fire department once you are outside the home.

SERVPRO of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser is independently owned and operated.

Cooking Fires are the Main Cause of Home Fire Damage

Do you remember that commercial where the dog jumps up to grab a piece of pizza off the stove and turns on the burner, igniting the pizza box and starting a kitchen fire? According to the National Fire Protection Association, (NFPA), the leading cause of fires in the home are due to unattended cooking. SERVPRO® of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser has years of experience restoring commercial and  residential fire damage in the Ontario area and shares some cooking safety tips with you from the NFPA:

  • If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.
  • If you have to leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop

Gas-Fueled Grills Cause 84 Percent of Home Structure Fires in the U.S.

In a report published by The National Fire Protecting Association, (NFPA), 84 percent of all residential property fires were caused by gas-fueled grills, and most grill fires happened in the months of May, June, July, and August. SERVPRO® of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser has years of experience restoring residential fire damage in Ontario and offers these fire safety prevention tips for using propane grills from the NFPA:

  • Check for gas tank and hose leaks before using the grill for the first time each year.
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose as a propane leak will release bubbles
    • If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill
    • If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again
    • If the leak does not stop, call the fire department
    • If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department
    • Do not move the grill

Backyard Fire Permits in Ontario?

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

A backyard fire pit is shown glowing with burning wood smoke. We are fire cleanup and restoration specialists in the Kaiser area.

Backyard Fire Safety

It’s Summertime and Ontario residents will be spending more time outdoors, taking advantage of the nice weather and longer days that the season brings. Many people install fire pits in their back yards and like to gather around the fire in the cool evening air to tell stories and socialize. The City of Ontario has outdoor fire rules and requires a permit to have a backyard fire so it will be important to check and see what is required to stay within the law. SERVPRO® of Northeast Ontario/Kaiser is on call 24 hours a day and can be onsite within four hours of your call to immediately begin the cleanup and restoration process should you experience property damage due to a fire of any kind. Here are some tips from The National Fire Protection Association and ReadyWV on fire pit safety:

  • Check wind direction before lighting a fire
  • Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires
  • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing
  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the fire
  • Avoid using softwoods like pine or cedar, because they can “pop” and throw sparks
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose or bucket of water nearby

California also has zero-tolerance for the sale and use of illegal fireworks including:

  • Sky rockets
  • Bottle rockets
  • Roman candles
  • Aerial shells
  • Firecrackers
  • Other fireworks that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner

Sparklers Cause One-Quarter of Emergency Room Visits
